TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN
The technology and design department at Cedar Lodge comprises of two full time personnel. One qualified teacher and one technician (shared with science). The facilities include a purpose built workshop with appropriate equipment, a saw/timber room and a dedicated graphics area.
We provide for all areas of the Northern Ireland Curriculum in a safe and nurturing environment.
Pupils work towards the appropriate level of certification. Every effort is made to ensure that each student achieves as high a level of success as is feasibly possible.
Currently the two highest levels are GCSE and AQA certificate of achievement. This is supplemented by more practically based AQA stand alone units.
Students undertaking the GCSE in Technology and Design undertake the syllabus as determined by the Department of Education and CCEA.
Students undertaking the AQA Certificate of Achievement complete six individual "units" which when complete form the final certificate. This is a National Entry Level Award. We pride ourselves that for the Electronic Products (Portfolio 3001) unit our students formed 25% of all nationwide candidates and achieved 100% at Level 3 Distinction Level. The moderator noted that:
"Electronic Products and Systems Control Technology had only a few canditates, who together formed a dedicated and enthusiastic group." -AQA "Report on the Award 2000"
In addition to this, Year 10 students may enter a sample of their project work for the CREST award. This is currently organised by the Northern Ireland Science and Technology Regional Organisation. Gold, Silver and Bronze awards may be achieved. Silver is equivalent to a GCSE project.
The department also utilises the Technology Enhancement Programme. This has been an excellent source of ideas which have proved to be both interesting and worthwhile.
