MATHS
Within the Maths Dept. we aim for a strong working relationship between the pupils and teachers.
The children should have confidence that, with the help of the teacher and their own effort they will be able to improve their standard of achievement.
The classroom will have a strong subject identity, the wall displays in modelling good examples of pupil’s work being used to aid teaching and learning and to provide information on mathematics in everyday life.
The SoW:
- Identify when and how ICT will be used.
- Outline formal and informal instances when pupils will undertake work related to processes.
- Emphasises appropriately the role of mental mathematics.
- Enable teachers to match the work to the abilities of the pupils including those requiring additional help.
- Provide a broad, balanced and coherent mathematics curriculum.
Teaching:
- The intended learning will be shared with the pupils at the start of the lesson.
- Where possible work will be set in a real life context.
- A variety of activities will be used which will entail the pupils working individually, in pairs or in groups.
- The ongoing work will be related to other parts of the course subject areas to encourage pupils to make interconnections and think of maths holistically.
Assessment:
- Regular and conscientious marking by teachers.
- The use of standardised tests to monitor progress at individual, class and year group levels.
- External exams such as GCSE and Entry Level, geared to the ability of the pupil.
